We spent the first week of August at the beach, just our family. It was heaven. (Except for Maddie's 4:30 am ER trip following a severe asthma attack...I'm blocking that out; although the boys and I got to enjoy an early morning beach trip after Jason and Maddie arrived home at dawn and woke us up.)
We spent Sunday through Wednesday morning at a resort in Myrtle Beach. It had pools and lazy rivers (indoors and out) and was right on the ocean. Jason declared the South Carolina ocean water "too warm." (Native Californians can't appreciate bath-temperature water, I think.)
Maddie LOVED the ocean. She would run full speed (for her) into the waves, then one would inevitably knock her down, she would laugh and laugh, then another would splash her in the face, then she would laugh some more, then lean forward and try to drink the water (always surprised by how gross it tasted). One of us had to always be with her because she wouldn't stay out of the water. Jason's excited that he may have found his shark diving buddy. He just needs to wait a few years. The boys spent countless hours digging in the sand, splashing in the waves, digging up tiny clams, and throwing wet sand at each other (and us). They were worn out by the end of each day. They would collapse into bed at night (and sometimes out of it...Colin is a VERY restless sleeper and we had to clear a "fall zone" every night and put him back into bed once or twice a night; we're glad he's still in a crib at home).
And we made a trip to a local outdoor mall, which features some carnival-type rides that the kids love. We're home now and back to the daily grind, but so grateful we had a chance to get away as a family, regroup, and focus on each other.
